On June 16, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted a webinar on the theme of “opportunities in direct selling” with Pukhayi Sumi, an expert in the fields of food and civil supplies, legal metrology, and consumer protection, and taxation.
According to the CII, Pukhayi noted in his address that direct selling may open up doors for one’s entrepreneurial path in a state like Nagaland where industrialization has yet to kick in. Pukhayi pointed out that the industry has always benefited women, and that it has been crucial in generating work for many Indians who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
A session on “opportunities in direct selling” were also held to popularise direct selling as an employment opportunity in Nagaland, with professor Bejon Misra from International Consumer Policy Expert and honorary professor of National Law University, Odisha emphasising the importance of raising consumer awareness in Nagaland. Rajat Banerji, vice president of corporate affairs, and Chetan Bharadwaj, general manager of the Indian Direct Selling Association, spoke at the event on the benefits and prospects that direct selling has to offer.
According to a study released by the Indian Direct Selling Association for the fiscal year 2019-20, Nagaland’s direct sellers, most of whom are women, produced Rs 100 crore in revenue. Hokhuli Sema, chairwoman of the CII Nagaland State Council and CEO of Faith Hospital, has already underlined the benefits of direct selling. Dr Aotoshi, former CII chairman and CEO of Window Media, moderated the webinar.
